A bunch of work colleagues from Bolton Steel Structures are hoping to successfully climb the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, Kilimanjaro. The team are supporting their friend and colleague Graeme McCall whose sister Linzi is currently fighting breast cancer, and in the meantime hoping to raise funds and awareness for Whiston and St Helens Hospital Charity “The Lilac Centre Fund”.

All the expedition costs have been donated by Bolton Steel Structures which means every penny donated will be going directly to where it matters most, so please give generously.

It is all too frequent that you hear about cancer and the effect it has on people and their families. However, it wasn’t until my own sister Linzi was recently diagnosed with breast cancer that it really hit home just how tough the battle and journey really is, not only for Linzi but for her husband Darren, her two children Harley (age 5) and Jorgie (age 3) and all her family and friends.

Only by being thrown into this life changing situation have I truly come to realise how tirelessly and hard NHS staff, individual groups and charities work to make this difficult time as comfortable as possible, for both patients and families of those affected by this disease. The countless heart-warming touches provided by the NHS staff at my sister’s hospital inspired me to want to give something back and to help them help other families affected in the same way.

Graeme, 2019.

After researching cancer related charity groups and organisations it was quickly apparent that all are worthy causes. However, one charity close to home stood out to me more than the others, The Whiston and St Helens Hospital Charity have launched an appeal to raise money for the ‘Lilac Centre’ who are in need of various and much needed equipment, this appeal became my primary goal.

For 25 years the ‘Lilac Centre’ provides important services such as; therapy and counselling, Reiki, aromatherapy and reflexology.

Headscarves and Headwear to give patients that extra boost of confidence when they most need it. Comfortable Chairs for patients having chemotherapy treatment.

Dedicated Specialist Hair Salon for chemotherapy patients who may need help coping with hair loss as part of their treatment.

Transport Services, Physical Activities, and Support Groups are also on the endless list of complementary services that this centre provides to make life for patients and families of those affected by Breast Cancer less stressful and more bearable.
